Inman Park Neighborhood | Atlanta, GA
Inman Park located in Atlanta, GA is just 2 miles east of downtown Atlanta. Inman Park is Atlanta’s first suburb & one of the Nation’s first garden suburbs. The neighborhood was developed in 1880’s by Joel Hurt who believed people should live in a country-like setting but still close to the business district. He insisted on large lots, curving streets, and parks throughout the neighborhood. With his help, the residences were connected to the 5 Points business district via a trolley system. The Trolley Barn which was the stop in Inman Park still available for rent for events & weddings.
Historic Inman Park or HIP to its friends, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Inman Park home styles include Victorian, Queen Anne, Dutch Colonial Revival, American Four Square, Craftsman bungalow, Shotgun home, Italianate Townhomes, condos, and lofts. You will find new construction homes alongside of the older homes. There are historic guidelines for renovation and new builds helping keeping the neighborhood’s roots tied to Hurt’s vision.
Inman Park proudly calls itself “Small Town Down Town” – having kept the community feel of a small town while being located in a HIP urban location. Active community involvement from the neighbors of Inman Park have built and sustained a thriving neighborhood association – Inman Park Neighborhood Association (IPNA) as well as the creation of Inman Park’s Security Patrol in cooperation of Atlanta Police Department. One of the best festivals in Metro Atlanta is the Inman Park Festival held each spring at the end of April.
Inman Park makes good use of its tree lined streets & sidewalks and features numerous restaurants, shops and parks – all within walking distance. Inman Park has a Marta station and the Atlanta Beltline project also runs along the corridor of the neighborhood. Freedom Park runs through the neighborhood and links Inman Park to adjoining neighborhoods.

Avondale Estates

Avondale Estates is just east of Decatur and Oakhurst. Avondale Estates was founded in 1924by George Willis after a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon with his wife. He was smitten with the birthplace of William Shakespeare and Avondale Estates reflects the Tudor-Revival architectural style of the city. Cabbagetown

Cabbagetown is located next to downtown Atlanta and was a mill town developed around the Fulton Cotton and Bag Mill, listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places in 1976. Cabbagetown, like most mill towns, features narrow streets and short blocks. Workers of the mill lived in Cabbagetown until the mill closed in 1977. The neighborhood has homes from the 1890′s and features Victorian bungalows, shotguns as well as newer construction homes. On Carroll Street – you will find shops & restuarants. Decatur

Decatur was incorporated in 1823 and named after Stephen Decatur, a naval hero. Decatur is listed on the National Registrar of Historic Places. One of the few towns in metro Atlanta with a town square in tact – you can visit the Decatur Square where you will find the history center, restaurants, shops and outdoor venues for fireworks and picnics. The City of Decatur has it’s own police department and school system. Outside of the City of Decatur limits – many addresses will still contain Decatur but will be part of Dekalb County. Decatur is large area and there are numerous neighborhoods in Decatur and various architectural styles including bungalows, four squares, modern homes, new construction, townhomes and condos. Druid Hills

Druid Hills was an assemblage of a large tract of land by Atlanta developer Joel Hurt. Hurt hired Olmstead, America’s leading landscape architect whose designs include the Biltmore House, NC & Central Park, NYC. It was to be designed as Olmstead’s “ideal residential suburb”. Many well-known Atlanta architects including Neel Reid, Philip Trammel Shutze, and Lewis Crook, Jr. designed homes in Druid Hills. Buckhead

Buckhead. In 1837, Henry Irby’s general store & tavern stood at the corner of what we now call W. Paces Ferry Road and Roswell Road. The legend is that on post outside the store & tavern was a large buck’s head serving as a marker for the store. Buckhead was placed on the National Registrar of Historic Places in 1929. You will find the Governor’s Mansion on W. Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead just down the street from the Atlanta History Center. There is a variety homes in Buckhead from mansions to homes to condos to lofts to townhomes. Inman Park- Historic Inman Park is Atlanta’s first planned community & one of the Nation’s first garden suburbs and located 2 miles east of Downtown. Active in their community – residents celebrate the neighborhood every April with the Inman Park Festival.
